How to Brush Correctly: Our Simple Toothbrushing Tips

You might not give much thought to your tooth-brushing routine, it’s just something you do (hopefully!) at least 2 times a day. Here are some tips to help you get the best results!

Are you using the right toothbrush? Your toothbrush should fit comfortably both in your mouth and in your hand. If it is too big, it will be difficult to get to those hard-to-reach back teeth or maneuver around. A good rule of thumb is that the handle of your toothbrush should feel as comfortable as holding a fork when you eat. For a person with manual dexterity issues, an electric toothbrush is a great alternative, but for most people electric versus manual is simply a matter of preference. In our office we recommend a soft-bristled brush that is firm enough to remove plaque without causing damage to teeth or gums.

Are you brushing often enough and long enough? You should brush 2 to 3 times a day. With small children it can be helpful to use a timer until they get the feel for how long to brush for the recommended time of 2 to 3 minutes making sure to brush all surfaces of the teeth and also the tongue.

How’s your technique? You never want to brush using long horizontal strokes that can wear away enamel and gums. Just place the bristles of your brush at a 45-degree angle and use short vibrations up and down or small circles.

When did you last change your toothbrush? For best tooth brushing results, keep your toothbrush in good condition. Give is a good rinse and tap out the excess moisture before allowing your toothbrush to dry thoroughly between brushings. If the bristles look misshapen or you’ve had a cold recently, it is time to replace your toothbrush. The average recommendation is to replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months.
